- So in my physics class we are currently studying waves. Yesterday I gave my students a homework problem where they had to make calculations about a giant ocean wave that was created by an earthquake and predict what would happen if that wave hit a city on the coast… and then there was an earthquake in Japan last night… and now footage of the tsunami in Japan is all over the news… and also today there were tsunami warnings here in California. Perhaps I should be more careful with the homework I give my students!
- I learned this week that Florence + The Machine will be play at the Greek Theater in Berkeley this June. I am super duper excited for that.
- Hot Tub Time Machine. I heard it was hilarious. It was funny, but it definitely did not live up to expectations.
- I just noticed, as I sit here at my kitchen table typing this, that we still have boxes sitting around from when we moved into this house. We moved in August. Yikes. But then again, we still haven’t hung anything on our walls so it’s not really that surprising. I suppose that’s what happens when you are insanely busy.
- Upcoming in the next week: a bachelorette party and a trip to Los Angeles with 100 students. Which do you think will be the most trouble?

I heard a song today that immediately made me think of my friend, Kate, for multiple reasons. So Kate, here is the song – dedicated to you with sisterly love. <3
For the rest of you, here is a pick-me-up song for this “please let it be the weekend already” kind of Thursday. Enjoy.

A Monday morning conversation:
Me: (wakes up bf) “What is that?” (points to something on bedside table)
BF: “Oh, it’s just a calibration device for a [robotic] hand.”
Me: “Why is it on your bedside table?”
BF: “Because I took it out of my backpack on Friday.” (goes back to sleep)
Some couples keep books on their bedside tables… apparently we keep calibration devices there.

- This week has been exhausting but yet super amazing. Both are because I’m a teacher.
- Speaking of teachers, there was a lot of talk about teachers on last night’s episode of The Daily Show. During the interview with Diane Ravitch, they discussed the increasing role of testing in schools and how teachers are blamed for it. At one point Jon Stewart said, “God forbid you do the job of a teacher for a year. It will blow your mind at how hard it is.”
I don’t agree with everything that was said in the interview, but it was definitely interesting. You can watch the whole episode here, or you can watch just the interview with Diane Ravitch here. - Here’s a joke for you: Why do elephants have flat feet? From jumping out of trees!
- Wondercon: T-28 days. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, up your nerd factor and go here.
- I’m headed to Tahoe tonight! I can’t ski or board due to a lingering sprained ankle, so I’m planning to spend the weekend in the snow relaxing and getting caught up grading. At least we’re getting out town for a couple of days.
Until next week…
